Guest Speaker: This year, students will also learn how to find a career in the arts with special guest speaker, D. Neil Bremer, Chief Operating Officer of the Grand Rapids Art Museum and 2015 Honorary Chair of the Michigan Youth Arts Festival! For the past 30 years, Bremer has excelled in the world of the performing arts – both in the spotlight and behind the scenes. A Michigan native, Bremer graduated from Western Michigan University with a major in Theatre, concentrations in Performance and Directing, and a minor in Dance. He then moved to Chicago to obtain a Master’s Degree in Arts Administration at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Soon after, he became the Executive Director of the Elmhurst Art Museum in Chicago, where he tripled the annual operating budget, secured new grants, increased earned revenues from programs and arts classes, and received statewide recognition for the museum’s contributions to the community. During this time, he also served as a visiting professor for Northern Illinois University’s Museum Studies program. Since then, Bremer has been a museum and nonprofit management consultant for several prestigious organizations, such as the Detroit Institute of Arts. Throughout his career, Bremer has actively participated in the arts; he has performed in several Kalamazoo theatre productions, starred in three long-running popular diner comedy productions in Chicago, has served as a theatre director and producer, and has played guitar both as a solo artist and with several bands.
